A well-developed system of tunnels and countermines was excavated under the Turin Citadel; the tunnels network played a decisive role during the Franco-Spanish siege of 1706 and prevented Turin from being taken. This large gallery « galleria capitale » continues 250 m beyond the fortification walls (Pietro Micca Museum, Turin, Italy; 16th-17th centuries).
