In temperate climates, the underground world provides a constant temperature that is the average temperature over the year. During the winter, the cavities temperature remains well above zero; approximately 12°C in the Loire Valley. Bats are iconic animals of the underground world; they are undoubtedly its most famous inhabitants. They take shelter under the ground and hibernate inside the cavities. From hibernating bats and their guano there is a complete food chain with bacteria, arachnids and insects. Close to the entrances, butterflies and other insects spend the winter safe from the cold. Another occupant, the badger makes use of galleries dug by man to extend his burrow with the least effort.
